You didn't mention wearing your arm in a sling for a week after!!!
I use bulb augers (2 sizes) & have hard, packed clay, too.
They work great but when they stick or hit a root, watch out!!
It's quit a jolt on the arm!
Sure would like to see your yard sometime.
Sounds like its worth the trouble.
