Starting Perennials from Seed in the Fall

This fall I want to start perennials and hardy
annuals from seed directly in the ground.  I
don't want to set up the grow lamps indoors until
the spring.  Can anyone give suggestions on what
to do or not do.  Which flowers are best suited for
this purpose-- as I'm not looking for exotics.
