This might be considered too dangerous, but one alternative is to
selectively
burn them out of the tree.
\My father also used a flaming rag on a stick; the flammable was either
kerosene or gasoline, I think. The caterpillars were especially likely to
have their nests in the black walnut trees around our house.
I remember my dad using a long handled homemade torch
like in the Tarzan movies, only with a rag soaked in sterno inside of a tin
can
to contain the flame a bit. The tents are very flammable and burn quickly.
Of
course, if you are in a densely populated or very dry area, this might not
be
advisable. Be sure to keep a hose handy just in case. :-)
