I never use to cut mine back, but now I do once in the spring and then again
about half way through the summer. I do it in the spring before the real
growth begins. They do wonderfully that way. As some of the branches turn
brown in the summer, I may just prune them back. Either way they seem to do
just fine, in my experience at any rate.

Never figured out how we are zone 6 -- in fact most of the Greater KC area is
Zone 5, I'm in a little Zone 6 corner
Now, isn't that more than you wanted to know.
