I've been using the Castor Oil Mole Recipe for 20+ years & haven't observed
any harm to plants or wildlife nor have I heard of any such problems. But I
live a sheltered life. As I understand how it works, the Castor Oil either
makes things taste funny or gives them some diarrhea. Whatever the reason,
the moles won't go back through it.
The commercial Castor Oil products are very expensive & say to spray your
entire yard. I don't know why. I took home a damaged bottle once & sprayed
my usual 3 - 4 ft around the perimeter. Also don't understand why its so
expensive since Castor Oil is very cheap.
The Recipe is much easier to use now that they have figured out how to
use it with a hose-end sprayer. It was a real pain to do it with a sprinkler
can!! I have a large yard that slopes toward a creek. I sprayed the Recipe
in July, 1997, & had moles in the yard only once since. I sprayed a 3 to 4
ft. strip down one side of my lot, across the back & up the other side. I ran
out of spray at the top of the hill on one side leaving a few feet free of
Castor Oil. During a short wet period later last summer, the moles burrowed
all the way up the hill & came into my yard through the short section that I
missed. I've not seen any evidence of mole activity since. I don't spray
every year -- only when I see mole activity again. I hope you give it a try
-- it works great for me!!
