Potentilla Problems

Hi Everyone!

Early this summer, I planted two potentilla shrubs.  They get full sun
and I am in Zone 5 (Iowa), but lately the top half seems to be
completely dying. (Brown and wilted)  They didn't flower very well this
year, but I expected that it was because I just planted them.  I'm
tempted to cut them back by half so see if this will revitalize them for
next year.  Has anyone else experienced this?  I'd appreciate any
advise!
