Gosh, I don't know if EVERY type can be, or not. Mine are in a fairly
protected area: probably really a zone 8 microclimate. But most folks
around here leave theirs in the ground without any problem. If you have
some that are unusual and you are really attached to, you might do as
you suggested and dig up some to be on the safe side. It might also
help to mulch the ones you leave out, if they're in a really exposed
location.
