What is this flower????

I am hoping you folks can help me. Everyday going to work I drive a farmers
field. In amongst the cabbages, pumpkins he has flowers growing. There is
one I do not know the name of, in spite of all my efforts and it is driving me
bonkers.

It is a tall plant about 3-4 feet high and is blooming now. It is a deep red
and from a distance looks like a humungus cockscomb, kind of brainy looking
:~).
Yesterday on "A Gardeners Journal" there were these two elderly ladies on by
the name of Grace (called the two Grace's) anyway, low and behold there is the
flower that has been haunting me, when the name was about to be said, my
husband asked me a question..ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! Missed it. One of the Graces
said it needs to be staked, but can't tell that from the farmers field. Can
anyone tell me what this flower is and is it a perennial or annual. Thanks a
bunch!!!!
