This is probably a better question to ask on the woodyplants mailing
list since this list is about herbaceous ornamentals. But...
I grow H. macrophylla 'Variegata' in a pot and overwinter it indoors
every year. Here in zone 5b it dies back to the ground, and since
flowers are formed on the previous year's growth I don't see anything
unless I bring it in.
Since they're dormant and not photosynthesizing, I don't think that
sunlight is too big of an issue. They should probably stay around 40-50
degrees (and no warmer) with occasional waterings. Regular potting soil
worked fine with me, but you'll probably want to fertilize in spring.
I use Osmocote as a time-release fertilizer...
