Re: Iris question

Hello,
I am no iris expert by any means, but I do know a little something about
their culture. I started growing and learning about them a year ago. The
ones I know about are the bearded ones only. Each type has its own culture
and 'rules' for moving and dividing. Bearded irises are supposed to be
divided or moved about 6 weeks after they bloom. You plant irises in the
heat of the summer...July, August, September being the most comman months to
plant. Some people do just dig and move whenever they want, but they take
the whole roots in dirt clump to the new location...less stress on the root
system that way. But, if you dig and divide at the right time you should
rinse all the dirt off the roots, break the new rhizomes off the mother
rhizome, trim back the anchor (the thick ones) roots, and let dry before
replanting. A very informative book about all kinds of iris and their
culture is *The Gardener's Iris Book* by William Shear, 1998, Taunton Press.
It is available from amazon.com. And, check out the American Iris Society's
webpage...there is lots of information there and links to take you to other
places of interest. It can be found at www.irises.org/.

Hope this has been helpful,
