Howdy all,
I'm creating a new shade/part-shade bed in my backyard. Most of my
"lawn" consists of Ajuga, English ivy, Creeping jenny, and Creeping
charlie (with smatterings of grass every here and there :)
I sprayed the section where the bed will go with Roundup, killing
off the grass on the first application. All of the other plants
mentioned were unaffected, so I sprayed with a second application
of Roundup. When that failed, I tried a third time. Some of the
plants look slightly wilted, but I doubt that they'll progress any
further and I want to start digging soon.
The only quick and dirty solution that I can think of is to burn the
weeds. If I were to go out there with a torch (and a garden hose)
and make broad passes over these troublesome weeds, I would think that
they would die. But I'm curious what kind of affect this could have
on the site for future planting. It's been done on prairies for
thousands of years, so I would think that there aren't any adverse
affects (other than raising the pH of the soil slightly).
The most obvious danger is the dried grass killed with Roundup --
it could catch fire and try spreading. However, the bed is
small (10x30) and I'll be standing ready with water and a modified
flapper on hand.
Comments or ideas?
Chris
