Re: Killing weeds with fire?
Chris,
Unfortunately people think of Round Up as a magic bullet that will kill
any weed including nut grass.
Here are some recommendations before anyone goes out and decides to burn
off their weeds.
1. Perennials weeds are best killed when they are mature, since
more of the Round Up will be absorbed by the roots, which is what you
want in the first place.
2. Do not spray Round Up when plants are stressed. If its dry I would
water well and even throw in a little fetilizer. Dormant plants are
pretty much protected from Round Up.
3. Don't make it too concentrated. More won't kill any faster. The
chemical in Round Up must be translocated to the roots in perennial
plants. Damaging the foliage with a high concentration will prevent
this. You'll burn the folaige off but the sprouts will re-appear.
4. No matter what they recommend. I still use a spreader sticker.
5. Under cool conditions experct slower results. Under hot and humid
conditions expect quicker results.
6. Make sure the folaige is dry but turgid.
7. With some plants you have to spary a lot of times. Nut grass is the
best example. Juvenile forms of nutgrass are very resistant
