</A>I have not followed all of this tread but would like to add a little
information, I do not know if it's relevant or not.
There are three native species of "Wild yam" or Dioscorea that grow native in
the eastern USA.
This is a small number compared to the over 600 species that grow in tropical
parts of the world.
The native species are:
D. villosa
D.quaternata
D.hirticaulis - rare
One other plant has been naturalized over a wide range and that is:
D.batatas - "Cinnamon Vine"
Others I am sure have escaped cultivation.
Our species have thin twinning stems up to 5 meters long, they form thick
mats of foliage on other plants.
Plants will grow in deep shade. They like moist open woods, thickets and road
sides.
I have seen large collections of them along telephone line right aways.
I have a photo of a black and white drawing of these plants at this address,
if any one wants to see if they look familiar.
