Pasque Flowers

Who can tell me about pasque flowers?

Are they short-lived perennials or is their growth and flowering sporatic
(or are my observations so limited that no conclusion can be drawn)? I have
two very small patches planted from local seed. The first patch bloomed the
first year after planting and the second year. This, the third year, I can
hardly find a plant. My second patch, planted last year, has many plants.
