Prairie tour

The Native Prairies Association of Texas (NPAT) and the Cross Timbers chapter
of the Texas Master Naturalist Program are co-sponsoring a tour on April 12th
of the Matthew-Cartwright-Roberts Prairie near Terrell in Kaufman County in
North Central Texas. This 200 acre Blackland Prairie remnant is one of the
finest and largest remaining remnants in Texas. It's quality is right up there
with Clymer Meadow, owned by the Nature Conservancy. The prairie is owned by
Susan Roberts and her sisters. Susan is on the state steering committee for
TMN. This trip will be led by Susan Roberts, and Jeff Quayle, a local
botanist, TMN, and board member with NPAT.

In May of 2000, their prairie was awarded the Texas Lone Star Land Steward
Award for the Blackland Prairie. See the website article from TPWD:
http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/news/news/000515a.htm.

There will be an optional afternoon trip to Lake Tawakoni State Park east of
Terrell to see their 40 acre prairie remnant.

We will meet at 8:45am west of Terrell at the Race Trac gas station on U.S.
Highway 80. From Dallas, take I-30 east to 80, then follow it to Spur 557,
which leads you to I-20. But stay on 80. The Race Trac gas station is about
1/2 mile down the road on the left.

For more details, contact Jeff Quayle at prairielover@ev1.net.
