suppressing native grasses

Good points, Cliff. I agree that it is possible to plant warm-season native
grasses too heavily, regardless of their genetic origin. I am glad that
some people are experimenting with initial forb-only plantings, methods for
thinning native grasses, and other innovative ways to avoid or alleviate the
problem. I'm also hoping that different burn regimes, overseeding, and
other techniques may help.

I dare to hope that at some point in the future, on certain pieces of land
planted to aggressive cultivars, land managers will have the resources to
wipe out the cultivars and start over with genetically-appropriate diverse
mixes of forbs and grasses. And I further dare to hope that someday in the
future, Farm Bill money, which has paid for so many acres of cultivar grass
plantings, will help to pay for killing cultivars and starting over with
better plantings in certain situations.
