ADMIN: update

We're up five members to 86 since my last update on April 4th. As a
result of our growing numbers, I think that some of the more general
list rules and expectations should be reviewed.

Most importantly, I feel that there is a disproportionate number of
"lurkers" on this list -- members who don't actively participate,
but read all of the messages. There's nothing wrong with this at all.
However, I would like to try encouraging those of you who haven't yet
participated to send a brief letter of introduction out to the list.
If people know with whom they are speaking, questions and answers may
be more forthcoming.

Another issue is a high number of unanswered questions. It's possible
that some of you may have joined after these questions were raised, so
I will resubmit them here. Don't feel that you have to be an expert in
the field (no pun intended) to answer a question. If you're wrong,
someone will undoubtedly correct you, but then we will have all learned
from the process.

Here are currently standing questions/issues:

   o anitaspov@aol.com --

looking for general advice on planting 10+ acres of warm season
      grasses

      Message found at http://www.mallorn.com/lists/prairie/apr97/0001.html

   o lindsey@mallorn.com (me) --

want to define the scope of this mailing list, need input. Are
savannas part of our discussion? What about woodland wildflowers?

      Message found at http://www.mallorn.com/lists/prairie/apr97/0000.html

   o Lots of people --

How do I burn? This was answered to some extent, but there are many
unanswered issues. If someone would like to create an entry for the
      FAQ about this...

o Looking for lists of books related to prairies

I would also like to address the issue of a FAQ for this list. I think
that it could be invaluable to most members. Items to be covered
include burning frequency, lists of prairie species, seed sources, plug
sources, recommended reading... If anyone would like to volunteer or
has information pertinent to these subjects, please send me a private
note to lindsey@mallorn.com

Finally, I'd like to remind everyone that anything sent to this list goes
out to all 86 members. This includes personal replies, notes apologizing
for personal replies, requests to stay on the mailing list, etc.

I understand that these things sometime happen, and I definitely do NOT
want to make this into a moderated mailing list where I decide what's
appropriate and what's not. So this is just a reminder -- I'm not mad
at anyone. :)

So, to send items to the list, send it to 'prairie@mallorn.com'.
To send items to the list-owner (that's me, folks), address it to
'owner-prairie@mallorn.com'. I'll handle administrative issues, etc.

OK, I'm all done. Hope nobody fell asleep!

Chris
