I am a volunteer in the herbarium at the University of Wisconsin working on
a database system for their plant collection. We are constructing a list of
all plants occurring in Wisconsin. We started the process by accessing the
USDA Plants database and quering for all plants from Wisconsin. The results
can be downloaded to your computer. This list includes accepted scientific
names and their synonyms and common names. The Web site is
http://plants.usda.gov/plants.
You can get distribution maps and in some cases even pictures.
Wisconsin's Botany Web site contains many prairie plant pictures and
descriptions. The botany site URL is
http://www.wisc.edu/botany/
Then scroll to Virtual Foliage, then vascular plants or Vegatation
of Wisconsin.
You might also like to see Orchids of Wisconsin which has an
interactive key to identify the species. It has photos, descriptions of the
plant and habitat, Wisconsin distribution maps, and herbarium records.
