My name is Stephen Johnson. I just joined the prairie list last week. I am
very interested in all aspects of prairie ecology, restoration etc. I have a
Ph.D. gained from Kansas State University in 1994 and I worked for a short
time in the "Cajun" prairie of Southwestern Louisiana (Coastal tallgrass
prairie). I have laerned a graet deal about prairie and am interested in
communicating with like-minded people. From the recent mail I have seen
discussion of prairie fire. Konza prairie (at K-State) has used mowing and
fire for prairie studies. Both will prevent woody encroachment but Fire is
the natural means. I worked on Prairie Cordgrass (Spartina pectinata) a
species that is particularly fond of fire. I noticed that the best looking
and most forb-rich prairies are burned biennially or every 4 years. Some
ten-year burned prairies can look healthy but trees and shrubs noticeably
increase.
I am also looking for a job and I would most definately like to work
in prairie. I would also like to attempt to answer any questions anyone may
have. I'd like to help.
Thanks all
Stephen Johnson
