Re: ADMIN: update

Hi. This is Anita from Maryland. A couple days ago I was asked if I was
going to plant forbs along with the grass . I'm planting 6 acres of "buffalo
mix" and 6 or more acres of straight switch grass seed. The mix has blue
stem and other grasses, I've not seen it so I don't know; but it does alos
have broadleaf s and flowers. I am getting that from the state. I have
saved seed of rudbecia (black eyed susan and butterfly bush which I shall
plant on an edge. I'm wondering about the mix and how I will be able to
control the weeds next year as I won't be able to apply a broadleaf
herbacide without killing the flowers and legumes included in it. I am
fairly certain with the established hay fields I'm "restoring", I'm going to
have to resort to some sort of chemical weed control. I hate using them but
they do do their job and it is time efficient. Does anyone know about
leaving strips of shorter grass for birds to forage?
I can't respond to the discussion about burning as I have no knowledge of it.
I asked the Ascs office here about it and noone had mentioned it in applying
for CRP funding.. I couldn't get CPR Funding as I had been a good steward of
the land and so they didn't have to fund me to change my methods.
Any thoughts about the mixing grasses and forbs planting and the weed control
problem that might cause would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Anita.....Point of View Farm, Urbana, Maryland 4/16/97
