Being another of the lurkers [at least for the short term] I will respond to
your request for introductions.
We live in the western suburbs of Chicago where we have an acre to experiment
with. We have a woods, foxes, possums, ducks, etc that have come to
live there.
We also have 40 acres west of Madison Wisconsin that could be called a
savanna. Eleven acres have been tilled, a few are wooded, a few are
wet lands and the rest are hilly pasture with oaks, walnuts, etc.
There is also a nice stream just behind our back fence that we have been
coveting. The pasture had been well used until we got the property, so
the prairie consisted largely of thistle [that looked as large as the oaks]
and other assorted weeds. We cut & cleaned out the weeds over a few acres as
best we could and now are starting to see a number of prarie grasses and
plants appearing. My wife has also planted about three hundred trees
[seedlings]. It is like an easter egg hunt trying to find them.
We have been cutting but would like to try a burn. A little frightening as
at a place near by, it got out of control and almost took out the house -
and that was with the fire department there.
We have applied for CRP for the 11 acres and hope to start putting that into
prairie next year. Only being able to work on it assorted weekends, progress
is slow, but hopefully we will be building soon.
Doug
