I just wish to acknowledge that in our tall grass prairie restoration
project on 26 acres in south-central Michigan, we completed our burning on
April 4 of this year. In this latitude, very early April is our preferred
time for burning; we burn annually. Three forbs species in particular,
that is Wild Lupine (Lupinus perennis), Pasque Flower (Pulsatilla patens)
and Shooting Star (Dodecatheon meadia) have done extremely well under such
burning conditions. Our native prairie grasses (i.e., all C4 grasses - warm
season) respond exceptionally well to such burning. As superbly described
by many of you yesterday, when one burns is dependent upon many variables
and is specific as to what are your objectives.
Success to you!
