Effect of honey mesquite on the Water Balance of Texas Rolling Plains
rangeland
J. Range Mgt. 43(6) 491-496
Lysimeters on three test plots watched for three years: mesquite prairie,
same with mesquites destroyed, same with all herbage destroyed (bare soil).
There is essentially no net change in deep drainage, evapotranspiration,
or runoff on sites where the herbaceous component increases in response to
shrub removal.
However, sediment production was greatly reduced by removing shrubs:
1401 kg/ha for intact, 249 for shrub removed, 23366 for bare soil.
