To those concerned with Melilotus:
I need to add one more point regarding my control of Melilotus in my
reconstruction/restoration of native grassland in south-central Michigan, a
point that I did not add in todays earlier report.
The invasion of any alien is dependent on a number of factors, soil
type being one of the most important. It is my experience that Melilotus
WILL dominate a grassland soil type consisting of a heavy clay soil (can
out compete natives in such soil) while it is somewhat less likely (but
still probable) to dominate (MAY dominate) a grassland site in a less heavy
more "ideal" grassland soil type.
