I have a planting of native grasses only which I
planted in early summer. Do to heavy thistle and other broadleaf weed
populations I opted not to add forbs this year. Besides the
thistles, I am particularily concerned about a sour dock seed bank and
others which I know only by a common name. I call the one 'marestail"
and another "wild lettuce". What I would like to know is if
anyone knows the life cycles of the marestail and dock. Marestail
typically infests new plantings the second season in this area. (Central
Iowa) and I think dock does too. Will these plants emerge this fall to
overwinter and produce seed next summer and fall or will they not emerge until
next spring? If they emerge this fall, could I spray the area with Stinger
or something to kill them with the thistles and then late fall or winter safely
without residue concerns, do a frost seeding of forb species?
Thanking you in
advance!
