Hi Hal,
I live in zone 6, just east of St. Louis. My grandmother had a V.
agnus-castus in her back yard. The plant is at least 35 years old. It is
in full sun, with no protection from wind and no consistant snow cover.
The soil is well drained and relatively rich (my family has been gardening
the property since 1904). While it does die back to the ground most
years, it easily makes 8-10 ft. of growth in one season. The growth is
fairly strong-the plant is host to a Clematis paniculata and has no trouble
supporting it. The flower spikes are deep lavender and about a foot long.
Drives the butterflies and bees wild! It you dead-head, it will bloom till
frost. I finally found 2 young chaste trees for sale last spring, and
planted them both on a hillside. The larger of the two has put out a few
flowers. I think these guys need a little maturity before they will flower
heavily.
Good Luck
Lisa
