I apologize for the error in my original posting. Poison ivy is indeed
native. I have to remember that some aggressive species are native plants
freed from natural constraints.
The problem I face is that the poison ivy is growing with great enthusiasm
in areas I will have to burn to control alien species. The plant itself
doesn't bother me; I generally walk through the patches without a problem.
However, I've read that burning poison ivy, even the debris, is extremely
dangerous. How do people cope with this? If I pull it, I assume I can't
compost it. And our local trash removal service does not take "yard" waste.
When is it safe to burn? Or should I set up a brush pile in a remote
location just for poison ivy? Please share your own strategies.
Thank you.
(From now on, I'll think through my questions a bit more before posting them.)
