Ed and Gale,
Depending upon what other species are present, herbicides can be used. Plateau
herbicide will kill fescue while not harming big blue, indian, little blue.
Sideoats is susceptible to higher rates of Plateau, above 8 ounces. Many forbs
are tolerant as well. Be sure to check a Plateau label before applying. Dormant
season application of Plateau is also an option. Spray when the natives have
gone dormant but the fescue is still actively growing. Dormant season spraying
of Rounup will also control fescue and not harm any grasses or forbs that are
already dormant. In southern IL I would expect you could spray late October,
however be sure anything you want to live is dormant.
Keep the tall grasses growing,
Jef Hodges
