RE: RE:Atrazine!

Ed,

Many of the pastures I worked on in southern Iowa had high abundance of tall fescue, and unfortunately atrazine did not do very well in supressing it. There were no significant decreases in fescue abundance due to any of the treatments -- fire, atrazine, and fire+atrazine. I was using the recommended level of atrazine for weed control in corn (2 lbs/ac or 2.2 kg/ha).

Atrazine did a great job reducing K. bluegrass, C. bluegrass, redtop, and smooth brome, but not fescue. I don't know what a higher dosage would do, but I don't think it would be a good idea given atazine's persistence.

Current research I am doing with a 3 year old prairie reconstruction along a highway roadway has shown a significant decrease in tall fescue (density of tillers) after one late fall burn (mid Nov). This sounds similar to your situation since you should have a fairly decent fuel base from warm-season growth. I can't be certain of the cause but can only speculate that perhaps fescue needs that fall growth period when temperatures are cooler for energy acquisition for maintenance. A slightly earlier fall burn may be more helpful.
