You've already gotten lots of good advice from others on this
question, but I would add that since there are several species that
will germinate without stratification, perhaps your teacher friend
should have student teams growing different species. This helps
add the concept of diversity to that of nativeness. It seems to me
that diversity is integral to the prairie (versus pasture, lawn, old
field, etc.).
Also, in my experience, prairie dropseed grass germinates at a
much higher rate with stratification.
