It is clear that we have a hot item up for discussion.
Lon, I think that you have responded to a tone of voice in our emails that
most of us agree with, and you don't. OK. You have my interest. Now, let
me explain that it will be hard for me to make myself listen to your
comments if you continue to take such a strongly challenging tone, because I
tend to focus on the emotions being indicated rather than the issue creating
the emotion.
I am rather surprised to find someone with your beliefs on this listserve -
what were you expecting to find?! Well, OK, let's talk about this.
What benefits are we speaking of, for each side in the argument?
I for one support HIGH PLANT DIVERSITY in grassland restorations because it
means it is more likely that something will be happy regardless of the ups
and downs of weather over a LONG PERIOD OF TIME. Fine, it may be that one
of the nearly or actual monocultures that you are speaking for will indeed
last a long, long time, but it will probably do it at the cost of diversity
as it overwhelms its neighbors. I also support high diversity for its
ability to SUPPORT A DIVERSITY OF WILDLIFE. I just can't see a simplified
community of aggressive, exotic grass filling this need. And I don't see on
the market an extremely high diversity mix of exotic plants that will
imitate the balance we already have in the native prairies.
And finally, as a taxpayer, I simply hate the thought of government
promoting more exotics when there's such a high probability of their being
yet another nasty pestulance that costs time, energy, and money to resist or
contain.
