Re: hello

To All,
I appologize for getting off the subject of prairies but here are some
more sites for aroids.

Now perhaps I should say something about prairies. I'm strictly an
amateur and still have lots to learn about prairies. 20 years ago I
lived on a rented acreage that included (to my surprise, because I knew
nothing about prairies) about 40 acres of native prairie. 16 years ago I
moved and have some very small reconstructed (?) prairie areas in my
yard (it's mostly woodland). I belong (but am mostly inactive) to the
Iowa Prairie Network which is active (through local chapters) with all
aspects of prairie. Last year our neighborhood bought an adjacent 12
acres which we planted to mostly trees but did plant two acres to
prairie (although we have discovered that some people really do like the
looks of corn fields and grass lawns!). And last year I got some
tillable acres of my NE Iowa farm enrolled into CRP. I planted 24 acres
of that to Iowa ecotype prairie, grass seeds purchased from Ion Exchange
http://www.ionxchange.com/home.html

at the rate of 5 lbs/acre. And I purchased a mix of seeds combined off
of Carl Kurtz's central Iowa prairie (his original seed was combined off
of the native Doolittle Prairie) at about 15 lbs/acre. I augmented this
with what a friend and I could collect at about 5 lb/acre. Only the Ion
seed was pure live seed.
I ended up with 139 species (on some species that was less than 1/4
teaspoon of seed) spread with a fertilizer spreader the first week of
November 1996. Within a week we had rain and 5" of snow.
I have since (during short thaws) installed a nursery bed here at home
for some 16 species that I'd like to become more familiar with.
And believe it or not, I usually don't say much at all on most lists I
am on. Hope I didn't boor anyone.
