Patrick,
I just checked Norm Deno's book to see what he had to say about that
species. He had only tested L. spicata in the 2nd edition, and germination
was straightforward with both fresh and stored seeds, both cold
stratification and warm temps.
Could be that there's a difference in germination requirements for L.
aspera. Do you sow both species for comparison? It's also possible that
there are a lot of duds among the seeds. Have you tried germinating a few
pots to check that out? How common and widespread are populations of L.
aspera in a "real" prairie?
