Re: Seeding and weed control...

Last year, I planted 12 acres half of that was switch grass and the remaining
acres in a mix of native grass and forbs (Indiangrass, big and little
bluestem, sideoats grama and oxeye daisy, blackeyed susan, butterfly weed and
sunflower). Both fields were treated with round-up and then the seed drilled
in. Last summer in Maryland we had a very bad drought (barely any rain from
April till September) and it seemed like my fields were only poison ivy and
longroot morning glory (as they were dormant when the round up was applied);
then towards summers' end warm season grass started growing. I thought the
field I planted in the mix had somehow turned to mature switchgrass. However,
the field I planted in straight switch grass I could see the little switch
grass seedlings all in rows. I researched and it seems as tho the round-up
killed the orchard grass/timothy hay and there was "purpletop" waiting, long
suppressed. Possible?? Still a good warm season bunch grass for quail, etc.?
The book I found it in "Pasture and Range Plants" says it is a native bunch
grass. It had a purple coloring in the autumn. It's about 4-5 feet tall and
stood erect all winter. About half of the 6 acre field is this. What should I
do on the remainder? In late summer I applied Plateau to try to get rid of
the weeds. I want to put the fields in the federal WHIP Program this year.
Any thoughts? Will last years mixture sprout this year?? Who has the best
prices?
Thanks, Anita
