I have a question about how to go about seeding 145 acres
of land. We have money alloted to buy seed, mostly ecotype,
or we can spend most of the money buying October hay from
a priarie 2 miles from our place. We received 20 1,000 pound
bales today. I went through one bale and found 30 seedheads full
of seed in about 50 pounds of hay. 28 seed heads were of switch
grass, the other two were indiangrass. I also found a quantity
of forbs and forb seedheads. Based on obervations of the prairie
before it was hayed, we know there is big bluestem seed in some
of the bales as well.
The other thing, which we just learned, in
this is that the owner of the prairie is
upset with the rancher who hays the place, and we would
very much like to secure all the hay from this prairie
for our own and future use, not only is it good hay, but
it obviously has great value for its seeds. This prairie
is about 100 acres.
We are thinking of offering to buy all the hay with
the understanding that we can hay the land in the future.
Would it be worth it to do so? Any thoughts?
