Controlling Reed Canary Grass can be a very difficult task. I recommend
consulting The Nature Conservancy's Biological Abstracts for examples and
success of different control techniques. Herbicides are not always the
only answer. In the case of the "low area" mentioned in the original post,
Round up may not be appropriate. It is not approved for use in wetlands.
The surfactants (basically similar to soap) in it are harmful to amphibians
and water dwelling organisms. In a situation where water is present and a
nonselective herbicide is deemed necessary consider applying Rodeo which is
approved for wetlands.

Please respond
to prairie
Andyswan:
Reed Canary Grass is extremely difficult to remove from any grassland.
Not knowing how much of this grass is on your "several acres", if it is not
too extensive, I would spot spray with Roundup Ultra (this grass often
takes several applications) and then wait and see what germinates and/or
comes up from roots. If this grass is too extensive (I routinely spot
spray my entire prairie restoration/reconstruction plot of 20 acres on my
own land in south-central Michigan), I would Roundup the entire site and
begin intoducing native flora. Good luck,
Cliff
