welcome!

Hello all,

Let's see...I'm currently a graduate student in geography who is planning
to finish before the start of the spring burn season. I got my undergrad
in Natural Resources/Environmental Studies here at the U of I.

Since my freshman year I have been an environmental activist via the
Students for Environmental Concerns (SECS). With regards to prairies
myself and two others started a group called Red Bison a couple of years
ago. We currently work a strip of prairie in the Village of Savoy along
Rt. 45 between Windsor and Curtis Roads. It is your standard railroad
prairie in that it is very long (1 mile) and very narrow (apx 40 feet
wide) and in bad shape. If you've ever gone to the Savoy Billion screen
movie theater you've passed it.

The majority has been highly disturbed (as in dug up by IDOT) but there
is a small remnant portion. For the past 3 odd years we have been
conducting burns, doing seed collection and re-planting, general clean up
and assorted others things. We have been talking with Savoy and IDOT and
are hoping to obtain some sort of protection.

Prior to our involvement the site was worked by Dave Monk, practically
single handedly. We also help him out during the spring burns and try
and involve fellow students throughout the year.

I'm sure i've left out lots of pertinent details and miss stated
something according to some purist somewhere but oh well...

Douglas Chien
