Chris:
Thank you for the warm, cheery welcome.!
To tell the truth, I am not yet certain that I belong on this list
and so will spend a bit of time observing.
5-1/2 years ago, we bought a small place in Iroquois County. The
land had been farmed half to death. In fact, a "scorched earth"
policy toward all wildlife and natural prairie life had been
practiced so thoroughly that the area was featured in "Silent
Spring." Needless to say, we learned all this AFTER we moved in!
Now we are trying to undo as much of the damage as we can. Our main
concern is a 3/4 acre pond and the field around it. We want to
naturalize(?) restore (?) reclaim (?) the area. It's a mess and
we're working nearly from scratch. The only encouragement so far has
come from the bullfrogs, ducks and pheasant that have taken up
residence.
I hope to learn a few things from this list. Any advice/information
other list members can offer will be gratefully taken.
