Welcome!

Welcome to the prairie mailing list. We're now numbering somewhere around
30 subscribers, so I think it's time to get the ball rolling.

Let me start by sharing with you my vision for this list.

This list is intended to be a forum for the discussion of any prairie-related
topics. These include restoration, ecology, ethnobotany, wildlife, and
my favorites, botany and taxonomy of the plants found within.

If anyone feels I'm missing something, please speak up!

Let me also tell you a little bit about myself. I'm currently the Senior
Unix System Administrator for Wolfram Research, a software company in
the midwest. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Landscape Architecture, and
hopefully will finish one in Horticulture sometime soon from the University
of Illinois.

I recently founded Mallorn Computing, a company that will soon be available
to help out the horticultural industry with technological issues.

But enough about my education and business. My love for the prairie is
primarily taxonomic and botanical -- for some reason I have a difficult
time getting into prairie ecology (although companion plants are of
great interest). I try to visit as many prairies as possible throughout
the summer, but tend to stay within Illinois. I've also been acquiring
a lot of prairie species and have a small garden in Chicago designed
with prairie plants (Compass plant, Rattlesnake Master, etc...) probably
totalling around 60 species or so.

What about the rest of you? What are your interests? Your backgrounds?

Chris
