waterhemp/herbicides

Andyswan asked whether or not one should use a broadleaf herbicide (2,4-D
type) on waterhemp on a plot that was just recently planted with native
grasses (and only grasses), i.e., the grass seeds are now just beginning to
germinate. The answer to this question is NO, NO, NO! The 2,4-D types
(e.g., Amine4 2,4-D, Mec Amine-D, Chaser, etc.) will kill most of your
grass seedlings at this very early stage of development as well as killing
the waterhemp. Next year, the grasses will easily tolerate these
herbicides. You have only one practical choice this year, i.e., frequent
mowing just above the height of the grass seedlings. Success to you!
