Re: Broadleaf Weed Control

I have heard that Stinger is effective for killing growing plants of crown vetch. I
believe (but check label) that the same herbicide also is sold as Transline. This
herbicide controls *most* composites & legumes (except I have found in a test that it only
surpresses the flowering of, without even wilting the plants, Lespedeza cuneata = Chinese
bushclover, serecia lespedeza). We as yet have little experience with crown vetch, but,
one small test application of Stinger last fall seemed to have substantially impacted a
patch which showed greatly reduced shoot density this spring. The Stinger label used to
be on the web at the Dow-Elanco site.

Stinger has been very effective for us on Canada thistle. Spot application to growing
pre-bud shoots in mowed patches (not boom spraying!) has resulted in shoot density
reductions in excess of 90% with each application (estimated from a few 2nd application
shoot counts & amount of herbicide solution applied). Commercial boom spraying of Curtail
(2, 4-D amine + Stinger) on mowed Canada thistle patches was less effective; shoot density
reductions significant, but, in some patches only ~75% (visual estimate only).

Stinger has some residual effect (see label), but, probably not enough to impact the new
sprouts from current and previous year's seeds of crown vetch, etc. There is a warning
about carry over inhibiting germination of *some* legume species, so, caution is well
advised if applied to large areas under reconstructive restoration.
