I've heard that Tordon does often move from tree to tree, and kills trees
effectively. It is used or used to be used by some utility companies for
tree/brush killing in their rights-of-way. However, I've also heard that most
restorationists in this area would rather not use Tordon because it tends to
move
off-target, kills many non-woodies as well as woodies, and has residual
effects.
Many restorationists around here who want to kill trees and shrubs use
Garlon, through a cut-and-treat approach. But in places that have desirable
vegetation, I'm told that Garlon users still need to be careful.
There is also a foliar-spray herbicide that targets woodies and leaves
herbaceous plants alone. I think it's called Krenite(?) But I've only heard
of it
being used on brush and small trees, not large ones.
My knowledge isn't firsthand, and corrections to any of this are welcome.
I'm sure info on these herbicides is available on the Internet. I've also
gotten very helpful information from public and private land managers in this
area
who know which herbicides work best on the problem species here.
