this announcement on Grassland Reserve money

This news just out. For more details see
http://www.privatelandstewardship.org AND do talk to your state office of
the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Ask for the person who works
with the Farm Bill programs. Each state has a technical advisory committee
made up of interested people. Ask who on their committee is specifically
representing prairie conservation. If no prairie conservation group is
represented, ask your leadership to request to be on the committee. It will
probably only meet once or twice a year.

Grassland Reserve Program funds are now available for a Nationwide
program -- a significant shift from the earlier notice of available
funds that were restricted to targeted areas, largely in the West.

As announced on June 13, $49.492 million is made available to implement
the Grassland Reserve Program (GRP) in fiscal year 2003. The nationwide
program, authorized through 2007 by the 2002 Farm Bill. Sometime in the
future regulations will be published and comments sought on the
establishment of guidelines for program priorities and criteria;
administration of easements and long-term contracts; funding allocations
and the process for private organizations and state agencies to hold GRP
easements. The 2003 funds will be available from June 30 through
September 30.

There was considerable opposition to the limited regional program
announced on May 14.

The announcement is online at
