Thanks to everyone who replied. The concensus is it is a milkweed, but in
Newcomb's guide it shows the milkweeds as having opposite leaves and I swear
the leaves were alternate. I'll have a look again tomorrow in the light. But
the flowers do look like the illustrations.
I'm about 40 miles south of Nashville TN. Our 14 acres is former farmland.
We are just a couple miles from the Saturn plant in Spring Hill TN.
