Early happenings in the Missouri prairie

After a consistently cold winter in the St. Louis area, things are finally
greening up in the burned patches. Erythronium mesochoreum is in bloom and
Pedicularis canadensis has flower buds. Castilleja coccinea and Phlox pilosa
have begun to bolt.

Question: Is the paintbrush along the highways down in Texas C. coccinea or
another species?
