The common orange annual is Castilleja indivisa; the perennial in
varying shades of purple, pink, salmon, orange and yellow is C.
purpurea. The bracts of indivisa are rounded and entire whereas the
bracts of purpurea are deeply lobed. Purpurea is the commonly seen
paintbrush in Texas west of Fort Worth.

After a consistently cold winter in the St. Louis area, things are
finally greening up in the burned patches. Erythronium mesochoreum is in
bloom and Pedicularis canadensis has flower buds. Castilleja coccinea
and Phlox pilosa have begun to bolt.
Question: Is the paintbrush along the highways down in Texas C. coccinea
or another species?
