Hello fellow prairiefolk,
By way of introduction, I live in Chicago but
have 55 acres of (intensively rowcropped)
farmland in downstate Illinois (just south of
Mattoon). Grew up on it. I have been planning to
reconstruct prairie on about 20 acres of
this beginning in about three years. It seems,
from the original land survey records, to have
been mesic/wet-mesic prairie. I've
done just enough reading over the past two
years to realize what a big project this is.
I plan to take an additional two or
three acres (in the middle of the prairie) for
a home site. I love the idea of having an
"ocean" (OK, so it'll be a pond) of prairie
around our home.
Reading the Jan. thru March
archives for this mailing list has been both
daunting (reminding me of what a huge and
complex task I'm considering) and reassuring
(intro's from several of you who have done
this or are getting ready to do so). Really, it's
very reassuring to find that several others
are into restorations/reconstructions of this
size. I was beginning to think my judgement
was seriously defunct.
I'm look forward to hearing how this
gets done!
