Hello all
One thing Carl didn't mention, is that in Iowa, most native prairies and
reconstructions are surrounded with some of the approximately twenty million
acres of warm season annual grass (Zea Mays). People get really upset about
burning corn!
Carl is definitely correct about the loss of habitat. Iowa is a biological
desert! Without our few remaining areas of native cover there would be no
winter cover.
However, I do believe that an occasional burn during "any" season can benefit
a natural community here in Iowa.
