Sorry if the below is a duplicate, but it doesn't seem to have made it to
this list (I've had server problems):
The Fall 2000 Missouri Prairie Journal (21:4, p12-13) has an article by
Steve Clubine (MDC) titled "Serecia Lespedeza Response Workshop" which
briefly discusses this problem plant in the Midcontinent. Numerous contact
people are cited. It also states that the 'next workshop meeting will be
held at Bartlesville OK in July 2001 and be chaired by Bob Hamilton of
TNC's Tallgrass Prairie Preserve.' I have no information if these plans
have been changed.
At our prairie restoration / reconstruction in east central Iowa, we seem
to be controlling two small infestations (estimated to originally have been
<1,000 plants each and covering <1 acre total) by systematically searching
out each plant and digging them all out by hand (approx. 2 person days
effort each year; more for the first treatment) -- obviously not practical
for larger areas. I note that 2 to 3 years is needed to eliminate well
established plants since broken-off major roots will resprout. The
numerous seedlings can be killed if pulled at the 3 to 5 leaf stage. We
tried clopyralid application (Stinger formulation) and it had remarkably
little impact on mature plants for an herbicide that is effective on many
other legumes (seemingly including foliar application to resprouting honey
locust).
Also note that, to my untutored eye, serecia lespedeza is similar in gross
appearance to some of our native lespedezas, including the federally-listed
Lespedeza leptostachya -- so accurate identification is essential!
