plant information (Christoper and Robert Scott)

I just checked my e-mail and found 12 messages from the list. After reading
the messages I'd like to offer some info from my experience.

First, I've luck growing cardinal flower but to grow it you might
have to disregard the observations you make of it in the wild. Every time
I've seen it in the wild (NE Kansas and Western Virginia, It has always been
growing alongside a stream. Naturally, I thought that this meant it liked
saturated soil. This always lead to death of the plants. In a typical
garden, they like fairly clay-rich soil and moist but infrequently saturated
soil. They also prefer very little direct sunlight. From my observations, I
think they grow near streams because the fast moving water provides adequate
oxygen to the roots. In a garden, stagnant water(saturated soils) deprives
the roots of Oxygen.

Regarding comparative blooming times between northern and southern
prairie plant blloming times. The prairies of NE Kansas and SW Louisiana
share a number of common species. Early season plants such as plains wild
indigo (Baptisia leucophaea) bloom two to nearly three months earlier in
Louisaina but late season plants such as Indian grass and Big bluestem bloom
at approximately the same time of year.

Hope you find this info helpful.
